Surgical Orthodontics
What is surgical orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics (i.e., orthognathic surgery) corrects jaw irregularities to improve the ability to chew, speak, and breathe in addition to improving facial appearances. Moving the jaws also moves the teeth, so braces are always performed in conjunction with jaw correction. This helps make sure teeth are in their proper positions after surgery.
Who needs surgical orthodontics?
Most orthodontic patients will not require any surgical orthodontic treatment. However, some individuals have severe discrepancies in the jaws that support the teeth and orthodontics alone cannot correct the problem. Dr. Fowler will consider surgical orthodontic treatment for patients who have severely misaligned jaws and facial aesthetic concerns.
How does it work?
Dr. Fowler will work closely with your oral and maxillofacial surgeon to plan your orthodontics and surgery. You will wear your braces for approximately 12–18 months prior to surgery to position the teeth to fit together with your new jaw position. The orthognathic surgery will be performed in the hospital with your oral surgeon. When you have competed surgery and the recommended healing period has elapsed, Dr. Fowler will complete your orthodontic treatment within 6–12 months.
